NORTHEAST, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team beat Notre Dame College, 7-6, at home in the North East Aquatic Center. Laura Perez scored with 26 seconds left to win the match on Senior Day.
Trailing 6-5 through three quarters, the Lakers made their move. Trish Armstrong found Kylie McCormick for the tying goal with just over three minutes remaining.
Hope Rozelle made several key saves down the stretch and Mercyhurst called timeout to set up a final attempt.
Perez got inside and found the back of the net with 26 seconds to go, putting the hosts ahead, 7-6. A last attempt by the Falcons went high and the Lakers escaped with the victory.
It was senior day for three Lakers, as Perez, Rozelle, and Kimberly Goodhart played their final home matches. Goodhart scored two consecutive goals to tie the contest in the third quarter. The Falcons led 2-1 after one period, but Allie Grimes and Lisett Calderon scored in the second frame to make it 3-3 at halftime.
Perez and Goodhart finished with two goals each. McCormick dished out four assists, while Armstrong had two. Rozelle posted 10 saves in net.
Mercyhurst improved to 11-17 in 2012, whie lNotre Dame dropped to 6-16.
