CWPA Releases Week 15/May 2 Women's Varsity Polls

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The final week of the season brought dramatic changes to the National Top 20 Poll as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Champion the University of California-Los Angles climbs to the top spot in the May 2/Week 15 Women's Varsity National Polls released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) league office.

In other polls, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champion Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and CWPA Division III champion Grove City College retain their spots at No. 1 in the Division III Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls, while CWPA Eastern Champion Princeton University climbs to the top spot in the CWPA Division I/II Top 10 following a climatic week of league championship action.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on each Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2012 Women's Varsity National Top 20

The University of California-Los Angeles, which claimed the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) championship over the weekend with a victory against former No. 1 Stanford University, returns to the top spot on the national scene as the Bruins garnered 99 points to rate in the top position of the  Week 15/May 2 Women's Varsity National Top 20 Poll.

UCLA, which previously held the No. 1 position from February 29 through the April 4 polls, moves up from a tie at No. 2 last week with the University of Southern California (USC).

Overall, the MPSF Championship results caused a shift at the top of the rankings as Stanford (96 points) and USC (91 points) slip to No. 2 and 3, respectively, while the University of California (85 points), Arizona State University (80 points), Big West Conference champion University of California-Irvine (75 points), Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) champion Loyola Marymount University (69 points), San Diego State University (64 points) and San Jose State University (56 points) hang on at No. 4-through 9, respectively, for another week.

Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) champion Princeton University (53 points) jumps three spots to take over at No. 10, while the University of California-Davis (52 points), University of Maryland (47 points), University of Michigan (39 points), Indiana University (31 points) and University of Hawaii (28 points) move to No. 11-to-15.

The University of California-Santa Barbara (21 points), Hartwick College (19 points), California State University-Northridge (16 points) and California Baptist University (13 points) stand at No. 16-to-19, with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champion Iona College (9 points) and Brown University (9 points) are tied at No. 20.

2012 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10

Another week, another No. 1 ranking for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champion Saghens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges as the squad holds onto the No. 1 spot in the Week 15/May 2 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10 poll.

The University of Redlands (95 points) remains as the Division III runner-up, with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (88 points) climbing two spots to No. 3 following the SCIAC Championships.

Occidental College (87 points) and California Lutheran University (79 points) slide to No. 4 and 5, with Whittier College (73 points) rising two positions to take over at No. 6

The University of La Verne (67 points), Chapman University (66 points), Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III champion Grove City College (65 points) and CWPA Division III runner-up Washington & Jefferson College (55 points) complete the Top 10.

2012 Women's CWPA Division I/II Top 10

The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division champion Tigers of Princeton University (97 points) added the 2012 CWPA Eastern Championship to a list of accomplishments to earn the No. 1 position in the Week 15/May 2 CWPA Division I/II Top 10 Poll.

Princeton, which defeated the University of Maryland 6-5 at Brown University's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon, won the CWPA Eastern Championship for the second time in program history and first time since 2000. The Tigers are advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history as the national governing body did not sponsor a championship in the sport until 2001.

Maryland (96 points) fall one point shy of tying the Tigers for the No. 1 position, while former No. 1 University of Michigan (91 points) slides to No. 3.

Brown University (86 points), Indiana University (80 points), Hartwick College (75 points) and Harvard University (70 points) rank at No. 4-to-7, respectively, with Bucknell University (65 points), George Washington University (60 points) and Mercyhurst University (55 points) completing the Top 10.

2012 Women's CWPA Division III Top 5

Grove City College completes the 2012 season as a unanimous selection as the No. 1 team in the Week 15/May 2 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Top Five Poll.  

The No. 1 pick of the league's coaches for the 16th consecutive week dating back to the preseason balloting, the Wolverines captured their third consecutive CWPA Division III crown two weeks ago at home in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool by upending Chatham University (19-2 W), Connecticut College (13-3 W) and Washington & Jefferson College (10-3 W).

Washington & Jefferson (95 points), which advanced to its second straight league title game, finishes second in the poll, while Connecticut (90 points) moved up to No. 3 last week in the wake of an 11-4 victory over Wheaton College in the third place game.

Wheaton (85 points) holds at No. 4, while Macalester College (80 points) stays at No. 5.
