Mercyhurst College Edges Gannon University 15-10 in Erie Showdown

ERIE, Pa. -- Junior center James Owen scored four goals and added two assists as the Mercyhurst College men's water polo team defeated cross-town rival Gannon University 15-10 at Gannon's Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The Lakers moved to 2-0 on the season after the victory, while the Golden Knights fell to 0-3.

Mercyhurst jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and led Gannon 10-6 at halftime, before the two teams played a relatively-even second half, with Mercyhurst outscoring Gannon in half number two 5-4.

Owen's six-point night led the Lakers offensively, while redshirt junior Kyle Scarry added three goals and sophomore Brett Luehmann added a goal and three assists in the victory. Sophomores Raul Ariza and Danilo Svorcan added two goals apiece, while junior William Page and freshmen Gavin Oakley and Alex Strong contributed single goals.

Sophomore Matt Cote started in goal for Mercyhurst, making 17 saves in the victory.
