BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Arny Warren (Jr., Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) of No. 15-ranked the United States Naval Academy and Alex Nowlin (So., Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro) of No. 16 Bucknell University share the September 19 Men's Varsity Southern Division Player of the Week award.
The award marks the second of the season for Nowlin, who previously picked up accolades as the September 5 Southern Division Player of the Week, while marking the first of the season for Warren and a Navy player.
Arny Warren (U.S. Naval Academy)
In a 6-2 week for the Midshipmen on the West Coast, Warren tallied 14 goals with four assists as Navy defeated No. 18 California Baptist University (11-10 W) and No. 10 Loyola Marymount University (11-10 W), along with Division III No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (14-12 W), No. 2 University of Redlands (12-6 W), No. 6 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (18-5 W) and No. 7 Whittier College (13-7 W). In addition, the team suffered losses to No. 12 University of California-San Diego (16-15 L) and Division III No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (10-7 L).
Against LMU, he netted a career-high five goals, including four in the second half, as the Midshipmen rallied for an 11-10 victory. The win marked the first by Navy over a Top 10 opponent since defeating then No. 10-ranked Loyola Marymount 7-6 in the consolation game of the 2007 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
Playing in the starting lineup all weekend for the first time in his career, Warren made the opportunity count versus LMU scoring three of his goals in the fourth quarter, including a goal to tie the game at 10 with 5:21 to play and another tally with 3:37 to play that gave Navy the lead for good.
Alex Nowlin (Bucknell University)
Playing in the North-vs.-South Tournament hosted by the United States Naval Academy, Nowlin contributed eight goals, 15 assists, four steals, two field blocks and an ejection drawn as the Bison faced Harvard University (18-8 W), Brown University (8-7 L), Iona College (16-11 W) and Fordham University (12-7 W).
The team leader in points with 23 during the weekend, he netted a career high nine-points in a five-goal victory against Iona with three goals and six assists. Nowlin's six helpers marked the most by a Bison player since Tate Greditzer handed out six in a September 25, 1999 game against Princeton University.
In the history of the Bucknell program, the last player with more assists in a game was Kevin Permisohn who dished out eight helpers on September 18, 1999 versus Salem-Teikyo University (now Salem International University).
He chipped in a pair of steals against Iona, while contributing three goals, three assists, a steal and a field block versus Fordham.
Nowlin concluded his weekend with three goals, three assists, a steal and a field block versus Harvard, while adding two goals, four assists, a steal and an ejection drawn against Brown.
