BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State University goalie Hunter Backenstose (Jr., Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) made 25 saves with six steals over the weekend in leading the Behrend Lions to a third place finish at the Division III Eastern Championship to earn a share of the October 24 Men's Varsity Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week award.
Following a loss to eventual Division III Eastern Champion Johns Hopkins University (20-6 L), he notched 15 saves with four steals in helping the Behrend Lions notch a top three finish with a victory over Connecticut College (11-9 W) in the third place game at home in Erie. For his play, he earned a spot on the Division III Eastern Championship All-Tournament second team.
During the Division II-vs.-III Eastern Crossover event, also at PSU-Behrend, Backenstose played the field and netted a pair of goals for the difference in a 13-11 victory over Salem International University.
He shares the award with Istvan Cseh of Notre Dame College who tallied 31 saves during the Division II Eastern Championship at Salem International University and the Division II-vs.-III event against Washington & Jefferson College at Penn State-Behrend.
