Flint Locks Up Five Goals as Macalester College Takes Down Pennsylvania State University-Behrend, 12-4, at CWPA Division III Championship

GROVE CITY, Pa.  -- Catherine Flint (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif./Henry Gunn) scored five times as Macalester College topped Pennsylvania State University-Behrend by a 12-4 final score in Game 8 of the 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Eastern Championship at Grove City College.

The victory advances the Scots to a 9:00 p.m. meeting this evening with Chatham University, which defeated PSU-Behrend 9-8 OT in the opening game of the tournament, with a spot in the fifth place game against Carthage College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 on the line.

Macalester put the game out of reach early in the first half as Flint connected on back-to-back-to-back-to-back shots at 6:51, 4:49, 4:31 and 38 seconds to account for a 4-0 scoring run by the Scots in the opening quarter of play.

PSU-Behrend responded with a strike by MaryEllen Spooner (Jr., Springfield, Va./West Springfield) at the 1:07 mark of the second period, but Macalester answered back prior to the conclusion of the half with a long shot by Sarah Shoemaker (Fr., Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) finding the back of the cage with 39 seconds to go for a 5-1 lead.

Suzanne Oh (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./North) padded the lead further to begin the third quarter as she connected on a blast at 6:36 before Spooner netted her second marker at 6:11 to shave the lead back to 6-2.

Spooner struck again at 4:50 to pull the Behrend Lions within 6-3, but Macalester put any comeback hopes to rest in short order as Adrienne Burgin (Fr., Walnut Creek, Calif./Acalanes), Flint and Shoemaker registered natural goals at 3:43, 1:02 and 26 seconds, respectively, to make it a 9-3 game through three periods of play.

In the fourth period, Burgin (6:08), Chloe Kaulas (So., Chicago, Ill./Latin School) (5:46) and Shoemaker (1:04) finished off the Scots' offense with goals, while Lindsay Musoleno (Fr., Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) put up a score for the Lions at 5:56, for the 12-4 final score.

In cage, Anya Phillips (Fr., Geneva, Fla./Oviedo) turned aside eight shots to claim the win, with PSU-Behrend's Elizabeth Causgrove (So., Erie, Pa./McDowell) posting 11 stops.

PSU-Behrend will continue the tournament at 9:30 a.m. on April 21 as the squad will face Utica College with a berth in the seventh place game at stake.  The loser of the Behrend Lions-Pioneers game will place ninth in the nine-team championship field.
