No. 12 Indiana University Handles Harvard University, 7-5, to Reach 2012 CWPA Eastern Championship Fifth Place Game
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Shae Fournier (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba/Grant Park) scored three times and Player of the Game Cassie Wyckoff (Sr., Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) registered eight saves as No. 12 Indiana University escaped Harvard University, 7-5, to reach the fifth place game of the 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship.
The victory moves the Hoosiers (27-9) into a fifth place meeting with No. 17 Hartwick College at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, while Harvard (16-12) will face Bucknell University in the seventh place game at noon.
Indiana started the scoring in the game 22 seconds in as Shelby Taylor (Fr., Calgary, Alberta/St. Francis) connected on a shot at the 7:30 mark of the first quarter. Harvard came back in short order to tie the game as Monica Zdrojewski (Sr., Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills) placed a ball of an advantage chance into the cage at the 3:57 mark, but the Hoosiers ripped off four consecutive goals to take a 5-1 lead midway through the second quarter.
Summer Creighton (Fr., Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) started the run at 2:25 before Alexis Jones (Fr., Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) followed with 34 seconds remaining in the opening frame to make it 3-1 after eight minutes of action.
Fournier then took over for Indiana as she drilled shots past Harvard goalie Ariel Dukes (Fr., Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) at the 5:52 and 4:16 marks of the second quarter to build her team's lead out to 5-1.
Needing a quick score to stop the bleeding, Harvard turned to Zdrojewski who put the Crimson back on the board with a blast at 1:36 to make it 5-2.
The margin lasted until the 17 seconds mark at the conclusion of the first half as Victoria Frager (Fr., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) converted on a power-play chance to make it 5-3 entering halftime.
Neither team was able to muster much offense in the third period as Wyckoff and Dukes stymied the Crimson and Hoosiers' until Fournier completed a hat-trick with a natural strike at 2:35 to make it a 6-3 contest.
Down three with eight minutes to play, Harvard refused to go down without a fight as Devan Kennifer (Sr., Monterey, Calif./Santa Catalina) and Aisha Price (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) hit for back-to-back tallies at 7:09 and 6:48 to move the Crimson within a goal at 6-5.
Following a yellow card by Indiana head coach following Price's score, Indiana's defense stepped up to hold off a concluding blow to the comeback bid.
Taylor finally dashed Harvard's comeback dreams at the 3:12 mark as she worked around her defender, accepted a pass and buried the feed for the 7-5 final score.
For Harvard, Zdrojewski led the way with a pair of markers, while Dukes finished with seven saves in taking the loss.
