Rozelle Saves Mercyhurst University Versus Gannon University as Lakers Take 6-4 Victory to Reach 2012 CWPA Eastern Championship Ninth Place Game
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Mercyhurst University goalie Hope Rozelle (Sr., San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) stopped 10 shots to earn Player of the Game honors and aid the Lakers in stopping Gannon University, 6-4, to reach the ninth place game of the 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship at Brown University's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Mercyhurst (12-18) advances to meet the victor of a contest between George Washington University and Notre Dame College in the ninth place game on Sunday, April 29 at 10:30 a.m. Gannon (13-22) earns a win to advance in the bracketing without diving back into the water as the Golden Knight lodge a 5-0 forfeit win against Salem International University, which elected to withdraw from the championship tournament on Wednesday morning due to an inability to field a team.
Gannon will next be in competition at 9:00 a.m. on April 29 when the squad squares off versus the loser of the Notre Dame-George Washington game with an 11th place mark on the line.
In the game, Mercyhurst never trailed as Lisett Calderon (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) torched Gannon with a rising shot that eluded goalie Libbie Guina (Sr., Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) 1:41 into the game for a quick 1-0 lead. The margin grew to 3-0 over the next six minutes as Bella Hersh (Jr., Pleasant Hill, Calif./Diablo Valley) and Kylie McCormick (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews) tallied man-up goals at 2:30 and 45 seconds, respectively.
Bailey Gadd (So., Golden, Colo./Lakewood) put Gannon on the board 20 seconds following McCormick's advantage strike as she accepted a pass and buried the feed with 25 seconds left in the first quarter to trim the Golden Knights' deficit to 3-1.
Mercyhurst and Gannon exchanged blows in the second quarter as Kimberly Goodhart (Sr., Reading, Pa./Reading) broke loose for a scoring shot at 4:18 and Colleen Harriger (Sr., Erie, Pa./McDowell) responded for the Knights with a five-meter penalty shot at the 17 seconds mark for a 4-2 Lakers' lead at the break.
Following a scoreless third quarter in which neither team could solve their opposing goalie, Mercyhurst iced the win in the fourth quarter as Laura Perez (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and McCormick scored at 6:44 and 5:03 to keep pace with Gannon.
For the Golden Knights, Katelyn Jacobs (So., Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) and Janelle McDaniels (Fr., Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) attempted to claw Gannon back into the game with markers at 5:57 and 5:16, but the scores by Goodhart and Harriger balanced out the comeback bid to allow the Lakers to escape with a two-goal victory.
A key to the game was Gannon's struggles on advantage chances as the Golden Knights converted on just one-of-12 chances.
For Mercyhurst, McCormick led five scorers with a pair of tallies in support of Rozelle as the Lakers defeated Gannon for the third time this season (7-4 W, 17-16 W OT, 6-4 W) to set-up a date with history.
The Lakers are guaranteed to record their best finish in the expanded Eastern Championship field as the program finished eighth at the eight team championship hosted by the University of Michigan in 2008 and notched a 10th place mark at the 2011 tournament featuring 11 teams.
