Golden Scores Five as No. 10 University of Michigan Tops Brown University, 10-7, in Eastern Championship Third Place Game

PROVIDENCE, RI  -- Kiki Golden (Jr., Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) scored five times, including a hat-trick in the third period, to claim Player of the Game accolades as Michigan used a 7-3 scoring advantage in the second half to sink host Brown University, 10-7, in the 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship Third Place game.

Michigan (23-12) trailed 4-3 at the conclusion of the first half but used three goals from Golden in the third quarter, along with single strikes by Lauren Dudley (So., Okemos, Mich./Okemos), Kelsey Nolan (So., San Jose, Calif./Leland), Audrey Pratt (So., Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) and Claire Ivry (Sr., Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) in the fourth quarter to overpower the Bears (21-17) down the stretch.

The Wolverines wasted no time in getting their offense in gear as Golden concussed the cage with a blast at the 6:04 mark of the first period to give Michigan a quick 1-0 lead.  Brown's Sarah Presant (So., Poway, Calif./Bishops School) responded with a tally of her own at 4:30 following the ejection of Ivry, but the Wolverines went back to work as Golden (2:30) and Katie Hazelrigg (So., Rolling Hills, Calif./Chadwick) (26 seconds) posted advantage and even-strength scores, respectivley, to place the Maize & Blue ahead at 3-1.

However, the lead did not last long into the second quarter as the Bears' offense awoke from its hibernation thanks to a pair of Lone Stars.

Following the ejection of Meagan Cobb (Sr., Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) at 6:53, Emily McNamara (So., Winters, Calif./St. Francis) chopped the margin down to a single tally by connecting on a crossing shot that eluded Michigan starting goalie Tara Brigham (Sr., Baytown, Texas/Sterling) at the 6:42 mark.  The pattern repeated itself at 4:53 as Madison Pepper (Fr., Baytown, Texas/Sterling) finished an advantage chance after the ejection of Golden to tie the game at three-all and give the momentum to Bruno.

Brown took advantage of the shift to take the lead at the 2:22 mark when McNamara tossed in a shot immediately following the end of an ejection to place the Bears ahead at 4-3 as the second quarter drew to a close.

During halftime, Michigan head coach Matt Anderson elected to switch netminders as Brigham came to the bench and Morgan Turner (Sr., Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) dove in to take over guarding the iron.

The change did not pay immediate dividends as Brown's Rebecca Zak (Fr., Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) took advantage of an ejection to Pratt to give the Bears a 5-3 lead with 6:58 remaining on the quarter clock.

Similar to how Brown's offense came to life in the middle moments of the second period, the Wolverines' scorers were rejuvenated by Zak's tally as Golden netted a man-up goal (6:39) after the ejection of Pepper and connected on an even-strength marker at 3:52 to even the scoreboard at five-all.

Golden struck again with another natural strike to complete her third period hat-trick with 3:28 on the clock and entice a yellow card to Brown head coach Felix Mercado.

Brown retied the game with 2:11 in the period as McNamara completed her own hat-trick, but the Wolverines dominated the fourth period with a four-to-one scoring advantage over the final eight minutes of play to take the three-goal win.

Pratt started the run 50 seconds into the final quarter with her only goal of the day, before Dudley dumped another man-up tally into the cage at 6:16 after the ejection of McNamara to push the lead out to 8-6 and register the game-deciding score.

Kate Woods (so., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) attempted to rally her squad back into the contest by converting on a five-meter penalty shot (5:56), but the Wolverines answered at 5:13 with a strike by Ivry to make it a two-goal game at 9-7.

Facing a nearly insurmountable deficit, the Bears pressed Michigan for a turnover.  The pressing action came back to burn the Bears as Nolan lobbed in an empty net score with seven seconds left on the game clock to ice the win and both programs' 2012 seasons.

McNamara led the way for the Bears with three goals, while Pepper, Zak, Presant and Woods each contributed solo scores.

In cage, Evan Cranston (Fr., Palo Alto, Calif./Castilleja) notched four saves, while the duo of Brigham and Turner combined for six saves.  As she came into the game with the Wolverines trailing, Turner takes the victory with a no decision being awarded to Brigham.
